29 Common Signs of Hypothyroidism
By Carolyn Dean, MD ND
Causing widespread health conditions for an estimated 20 million people in the United States, thyroid imbalance is hard for doctors to properly diagnose because it often manifests before blood tests become abnormal. Also the early symptoms of thyroid imbalance can be easily confused with other conditions.
So, how do you know if you are suffering from thyroid imbalance? For starters, you could see if you are experiencing 3 or more of the following common signs.
- Yeast infection
- Vitiligo (loss of skin color)
- Sleep apnea
- Alopecia (sudden hair loss in patches)
- High blood pressure
- Low blood pressure
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Melasma (patches of discoloration on face)
- Raynaud's syndrome (painful blue/red fingers with exposure to cold)
- Dry mouth
- Polymyalgia (muscle pain and stiffness around shoulders, hips)
- Dry eyes
- Attention Deficit Disorder
- Dry skin
- Muscle cramps
- Lump in breast
- Brittle nails
- Skin problems (hives, psoriasis, eczema)
- Hoarse voice
- Cold hands and feet
- Scalloped tongue
- Low sex drive
- Excessive ear wax
- Cold intolerance
- Slow heartbeat
- Chronic infection
- Tongue biting
- Headaches and migraines
If you or someone you know experiences 3 or more of these symptoms, then please read on.
I agree that people with preclinical stages of thyroid imbalance may suffer all these associated symptoms but it’s not necessarily because of thyroid disease, itself. From my almost 50 years of study and experience, I’ve narrowed the reasons for thyroid imbalance down to the true root causes: mineral deficiency and yeast overgrowth, leading to, what I call, “Total Body Meltdown (TBM),” which always involves the thyroid.
TBM is not a medical condition but it’s what happens to the body when the adrenals, sex hormones, immune system, the heart, kidneys, liver, gut, and brain are operating without their proper building blocks and resources! Yeast overgrowth is well known to happen when our normal intestinal organisms are thrown out of balance by antibiotics, high carb diet, and stress.
Yeast overgrowth and mineral deficiency together will then create nutrient deficiencies and weight gain and be misdiagnosed as acid reflux, leaky gut, food allergies, hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency, and much more!
No matter what chronic disease you look at today you will come up with a long list of all the associated conditions, just like you do with thyroid imbalance. That’s why I say it’s TBM because all systems are affected. However, if you label and treat each imbalance individually, you end up with an array of diets, supplements, and advice that becomes overwhelming, confusing, and contradictory.
